About the College
The West African College of Physicians (WACP), established in 1976, is a regional professional body committed to advancing postgraduate medical education and promoting excellence in medical practice across West Africa. The College brings together medical specialists across a range of key disciplines, fostering collaboration, professional development, and the highest standards of patient care throughout the region. Membership & Structure
At its inception, the College operated within the five English-speaking countries of West Africa. Over time, its reach has expanded significantly to include physicians from the eight French-speaking countries of the sub-region, reflecting its growing regional impact and inclusiveness. The College is organised into Faculties, each representing a major medical discipline. Within each country, Fellows are further organised into national Chapters, which coordinate professional activities, training, and collaboration at the national level. Objectives of the College
- Promote the professional training and continuous development of physicians across West Africa.
- Uphold high standards of medical practice, ethics, and professional conduct.
- Advance health promotion and strengthen healthcare delivery systems throughout the region.
- Assess, train, and certify qualified physicians as specialist practitioners based on their training, experience, and demonstrated competence.
- Provide expert guidance and support to governments, the West African Health Organisation, and other relevant bodies on matters relating to healthcare, medical training, and research.
- Collaborate with national and international organisations that share and support the Collegeโs mission and objectives.
- Promote research and academic scholarship through the publication of books, journals, and other scientific materials.
Training, Collaboration, and Global Engagement
The College plays a central role in the postgraduate specialist training of physicians across the Anglophone countries of West Africa, covering all six of its major medical specialties. It organises a wide range of educational and scientific activities, including the Annual General and Scientific Meeting, which rotates among member countries and serves as an important platform for knowledge exchange, research presentation, and professional networking.
